Sketchbook Collective
Hi friends! I’m Sam, the founder of propagate studio. several years ago I participated in a similar experience called the sketchbook project. They were based in Brooklyn and housed over 35,000 sketchbooks that were from artists all over the world. It was a very important part of my life and they actually are no longer around. my book tragically was lost in a fire they had but their remaining collection has been shared with several other artist collectives across the country.
I am bringing this project to Propagate because It is an incredible way to connect with artists from all over the world and create a unique library for our community to see and experience. a sketchbook is a sacred item in the artists tool bag and by creating a library of them for others to see and be inspired by is just another awesome way we can grow our creativity
here are some things about this project that are important!
anyone can be part of this project. (yes even if you don’t think you are an artist)
you can do way more than sketching in these books (write, collage, cut, paint, glue, deconstruct, reconstruct, whatever!)
the books are 8x5.5in in size with 60 pages
the books will be permanently part of Propagate studio’s sketchbook collective and customers will be able to view your book when they visit us
You do not have to be local to participate in this project! we can mail your sketchbook too you and you can mail it back when you are done!
How it works:
Step 1: buy a sketchbook from us for $22 by May 30th
Step 2: create! Fill your sketchbook with your creations! alter the book however you’d like as long as it stays within the original length and height. pick one of our themes for this season or create your own. You can draw, paint, collage, not just sketching!
Step 3: return your sketchbook by august 30th and come see them all in person at our reception August 31st
Step 4: come view the sketchbooks in our library at the studio once we have the collection!
Some tips when you are working on your sketchbook:
work intuitively! DOn’t overthink the blank page. If it helps you, start with a bunch of scribbles on the page first then work on top of that, or erase it then start creating!
don’t be afraid to think outside the box, or page. Glue things in, have things unfold, make this an experience for you and the viewer.
more traditional? wonderful! sketch away and feel free to do little writings in the book alongside your drawings.
set up artist dates with yourself and time on your schedule to work on your book. You have all summer but time flies!
take pictures of your process and pictures of your final piece
pick a theme, either one of ours or one of your own!
day in the life
beauty in the ordinary
weird and wonderful
have fun!
(If you are located outside of the country please email me to place your order propagatestudionj@gmail.com)
Welcome to the Sketchbook Collective!
(books are completely blank and do not have that logo actually printed on them but will have a sticker on the back and you will receive a sticker as well!)
